History

CED, Ltd. was formed in 1993 as a Latvian-German joint venture. The core business of the company was based on the round-wood sawmill which has been gradually expanded with kilns, planing facilities, pressure treated impregnation, manufacturing of wood pellets and briquettes from sawdust as well as assembling of different garden houses and elements.

The next step was the construction of the heating central (Boilers made by Bano, Italy) that was built in spring 1997. As sawdust is being used as fuel, partially it solved the problem of woodwaste utilization which was a big headache for wood-processing mills in the market at that time. At the same time it provided heating for the chamber dry-kilns, which were set up at that time (Kilns made by UTEC, Sweden). The next logical step in the company's development was installation of planing facilities, and planing capacities have been gradually increased since then.

Between 1997 and 2003 sawmill processed around 50 000 m3 of round timber annually, reaching a stable sawn timber output 20 000 - 25 000 m3 per year, most of it kiln dried and planed.

Simultaneously in 1997 a sawdust briquetting press (RUF, Germany) was installed. It contributed to utilization of the woodwaste and added another ecologically friendly item to CED products list. No far ahead, in October 1998, the company started production of sawdust pellets. This turned out to be very demanded product in Scandinavian market, and it provided a complete utilization of sawdust and shavings created in sawing and planning processes.
